Sandpiper Log – September 2008

NEXT GENERAL MEETING: MONDAY, September 15 @ 11:00 A.M.

(There will be a board meeting at 10:00)

Our next show, “Watercolor Women and Friends”, opens September 9th and features the Wednesday Water Color group, Marj Grinde, Carol Daniels, Marj Burgan, Dorothy Preston, Jeanne Stromnes, and Alice Varnuum. Their “friends” are Jay Cross, with his wonderful photography, Joyce Reed, with her portraiture, and Nancy Gordon with her unique and creative paper mache pieces. This show runs through October 18th. The reception will be held on Friday, September 12, from 5-7 P.M.. We have been having wonderful attendance to our receptions and they are becoming “the” place to go in downtown Polson.

“Summer Company”, featuring members Jere Ancell, Bob Granzow, Ken Hansen, and guests Waldo Solonar, Bob Phinney, and R. Wade Nelson, is closing on the 6th of September after a very successful run at the gallery. The 6th is also the date that members should pick up their work from the member wall and bring in new work to replace it. As always, the Sandpiper Art Gallery shows depend heavily on the members’ work for the success of the show. I am always amazed at the great work our members produce, and how wonderful it looks all together. Please all be prepared for our fall show, “Members and More”, which will be an open invitational show to all artists to show up to 3 pieces of their work. Members and non-members art will be mixed throughout the gallery, with the member wall disappearing for the show. We will need lots of art, so invite your artist friends to participate. There will be a nominal exhibition fee for non-members and, of course, none for members. Also, it is not too early to be thinking about our annual holiday show and sale. Only members will be featured, both art and crafts and it is hoped that we can fill the gallery to the brim for the holidays. Mary Kelley, Gallery Director

Dear Sandpiper Members, The weather is changing (we drove through snow on MacDonald Pass on Monday!) and when that happens we here in the temperate zones seem to get energized to work. I hope all of you are finding a great deal of satisfaction in the creative process. Our Gallery is a fine place to exhibit and fun to work in—I hope you all take advantage of both opportunities. Happy Fall and go for it! Joanne Simpson, President

Notes from the General Meeting of August 18, 2008

The festival was discussed, and Pat Wallace gave a report of the festival income to date. It was noted that six applicants did not attend. There were not as many vendors as in past years, due to rise in gas prices and perhaps for other reasons. The Monte Dolack print total raffle sales were $550.00 and it was won by Dick Beigle. The problem of the Leader not publishing news releases for shows and receptions was discussed and Dick and Joanne will visit the Leader editor to discuss this situation and also to invite the editor to a show reception. Motion made by Mary Kelley for this, seconded and approved by all. Gallery Director, Mary Kelley, announced the next show dates are Oct 12th to Nov. 22nd. It was suggested that former members Pauline Manning, Jane Dibble, Betty Hudson and Auda Thomas be contacted to have pictures in this show and the publicity write up include special attention to these former members. New Members’ packets will be made by Dorothy Preston and will be done in September. It was noted that committee reports will be made at every general meeting so that all members will know what is being done to further the Sandpiper Gallery goals and business. It was also noted that all members remember their obligation to attend the gallery as their membership status requires. Acting Secretary, Dorothy L Preston

MEMBER TO MEMBER:

Marge Grinde, Marj Burgan and Joyce Reed were accepted into the 2008 Montana Watercolor Society’s Watermedia Show. This show is held each year in Bigfork during the month of October. This is the third time Joyce and Marj have been accepted into this show. They will be voted into the Montana Watercolor Society as “signature members” at the annual meeting in October, making them eligible to put MTWS after their signatures. Marge Grinde is already a signature member. Congratulations!

THE WORKSHOP WITH MELISSA CARR WAS A GREAT SUCCESS. THERE WERE 15 PEOPLE ATTENDING AND EVERYONE COMMENTED THAT IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE. THANK YOU JOANNE FOR BRINGING HER TO OUR ATTENTION. WE HOPE TO HAVE HER BACK AGAIN.

JOANNE SIMPSON'S WORKSHOPS WERE WELL ATTENDED AND THERE WAS GREAT PRAISE FOR HER STYLE OF TEACHING. THANKS JOANNE FOR ARRANGING WITH THE SCHOOL TO HAVE BOTH THESE WORKSHOPS IN THE ART ROOM.

Mary Sale accompanied patron member America Nieves-Morales to Chicago for the International Old Lacers Convention to interview her for the 2009 lace issue of Piecework magazine. The conference was a disappointment, so we left early and went downtown to visit all the old haunts America loved 25 years ago. We were amazed by the outdoor amphitheater, a work of art in itself, and the sculpture and parks everywhere. What a stunning city! Then we took an architecture cruise on the river and out on the lake in the sunshine. We found the library America had taken her little boy to has now evolved into an art center (THERE's a switch!). The best part was a ride with a crabby cabby who wanted an exact address, which she couldn't remember down the street she used to live on, cruising a rough old neighborhood that had become nice, tidy San Francisco style bay window homes until she found the house, and imagine the joy of two old cousins hugging and crying and chattering away in Spanish after so many years! And then, best of all, she asked us in for a Puerto Rican dinner! --Mary Sale

Mary Kelley will be showing her paintings at “the Loft” in Whitefish September 4th thru 30th. The collection is called "Montana Landscapes". The reception will take place September 4th on Gallery Night 6-9 P.M.

Kelly Apgar and Mary Kelley participated in the 1st annual paint-out in Bigfork, sponsored by Saddlehorn development and the Bigfork Art and Cultural Center. Two days of painting plein aire were followed by an auction in which they both sold their work. . Twenty-six local artists participated.

NEWSLETTERS VIA EMAIL: If you receive your newsletter via e-mail, workshop posters are attached. I look forward to being able to include photographs of member work as well. Write me at stocml@hotmail.com if you would like to receive your newsletter via e-mail. Make sure you write Sandpiper Gallery Newsletter in the subject line so that your email does not go into my junk mail.
